Friday, May 6: Split
After breakfast, we explore the
environs and markets of Split’s old town, which is snuggled within the walls of
Diocleatian’s Palace; then walk the waterfront to its northern end.
Check into hotel, La Porta Luxury Rooms, which is wonderful except for the lack of an elevator and a third floor room. But bellmen are available and only too willing to help.

For lunch we head to the south end
of the waterfront and the lovely restaurant Dvor. Our table is on an outside
patio at the waterfront. Two courses: excellent appetizers for all,
followed by rather ordinary main courses. After lunch, we walk along the
waterfront to the main square. The beach has attracted a sizable group of tourists including many bikini and speedo clad sunbathers who make us appreciate the common sense and good taste
we exhibited when we left that apparel behind after rolling over from our
twenties.
In the evening, we dine at
Paradigma, where we had hoped to be seated on the roof top terrace. But the
weather is just a little too cool and the terrace is closed. We all opt for the
5-course tasting menu, which is quite nice but convinces us all that, at least
for the time being, we have had enough of tasting menus and will stick with ala carte choices.
