Bella Italia: San Miguel de Allende

  Upon our arrival in San Miguel de Allende on January 2, we returned for dinner to Bella Italia, the restaurant we ate at our first night ever in SMA (two years ago). Our server was friendly and energetic and the food (ensalada de casa, pasa cuatro quesos, pasta pescatore) was as good as the first time around -- as were the margaritas and wine. There were only three parties in the restaurant, however, which may reflect that it is the Sunday after New Year's Day or a drastic drop in the tourist trade. The driver who picked us up at the airport and brought us to SMA told us that tourism had fallen off significantly due to publicity over Mexico's war on drugs and the downturn in the world economy. We will keep and eye on this. Meanwhile, if you're in SMA stop in to Bella Italia for dinner.
