Today we moved on to Albuquerque, leaving the mountains and returning to the high desert plains. The timing of this entire trip was around Albuquerque’s annual Balloon Fiesta. The fiesta has its own huge field and during the fiesta that field includes Main Street, a ½ mile strip of food, food, and more food (with a few souvenir shops thrown in). The first evening we attended featured odd shaped balloons, inflated though tethered. We were free to walk among them as we wished. As soon as the sky darkened enough, the burners on all the balloons were fired simultaneously, creating a brief glow of whimsical shapes across the field. Adult or child, this is pure magic. Many of these balloons are larger than the standard teardrop balloons. Some look like they won’t get off the ground! There
was a flying pig, stork, milk cow, dragon, daisy, wine bottle, truck, pirates, Noah’s Arc, castle (with turrets!), comic book characters, Nemo, Uncle Sam, WF Stagecoach, Darth Vader, and on and on. The price of admission to the Fiesta is patience because of the enormous crowds that must enter the field twice a day (you pay parking an admission twice), once for \the morning group launch and, again, for the evening glow. It is well orchestrated but still takes plenty of time. A wonderful evening!
