Pismo Beach

Finally pulled the Outback out of storage last Thursday. Working on it intermittently through Friday and Saturday, we completed the de-winterization and got it in shape for our upcoming travel schedule. Sunday noon we departed on the 50-mile trip to Pacific Coast Village RV Resort in Pismo Beach, California — arriving a little over an hour later. At 65°, it is also 30° cooler.

After setting up, we pack a picnic dinner and drive 50 miles further to the Solvang Festival Theater of the Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts (
PCPA). Our picnic of grilled rosemary chicken thighs, Pat's traditional potato salad, and backyard-grown Celebrity tomato, is marred by a corked bottle of white burgundy. Nonetheless, thanks to a strong cast, we enjoy a performance of the dated score and more dated material of Godspell.

On Monday morning, we bicycle north along Pacific Coast Highway, escaping the gloom of the marine layer as we approach Avila Beach and Port San Luis. At
Fatcats Cafe, a favorite place for breakfast, brunch or lunch, we each order a taco salad, substituting chile verde for chicken ($2.00 extra). Salad is very good but not equal to the superb chile verde omelet that we normally split along with an order of fries and the house salad. Fatcats is a must stop if you're visiting the Central Coast.

In early evening we walk the beach for a couple of miles, returning along the dunes walk of Pismo Beach State Park. Though the marine layer hovers not more than 200' overhead, we can look north to the sun streaming on to San Luis Obispo Bay.
